Bus and Train fares up on Oct 1

The Public Transport Council has said yes to giving SMRT and SBS to raising fares from Oct 1. More details here.

The main issue I have here is that while the 2 companies always talk about the need to increase fares to cope with rising operational costs and fuel prices, they are recording RECORD PROFITS almost every year. Its not like they are losing money, but they are still earning. But this public transport is not so public anymore. The fare prices keep increasing and will be especially significant for those lower income groups making direct trips or long trips. Well, good luck to them. Hopefully they can get better transport vouchers (currently at $30 each). Actually, I always wonder how do your family qualify for getting a transport voucher? Can I apply for one too?

Fare prices increase year after year and yet, the service provided hardly justifies the increase. The situation has changed pretty badly the last 5 years actually. The train seems to be crowded always. Even at the bus stop at my home, a lot of people wait to take the bus to the MRT 2 stops away. That makes the buses very full. And at the same time, those who need to take the buses longer than the 2 stops are unable to board the buses. What can they do, suck thumb and wait for another one. I see so many people unable to get up the buses every morning. I wonder whether the case is much worse since I am away for almost 6 months. When I go back, I have to get myself ready for the BIG SQUEEZE.

But I cant complain too much. After doing some calculations, I think I can save money from this transport fare hike. =D Bagus!! Well, I am a heavy user though, at least 6 trips a day. Bus-train-bus to school and back. Well, sometimes I walk to/back from the MRT, but depends on the weather. Too humid or hungry then cannot walk too.
